ABOUT PEPTIDES

What They Are

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same basic building blocks that make up proteins in biological systems.

Because they are smaller than full proteins, peptides are commonly used in biochemical and laboratory research to study cellular signalling, metabolic pathways and molecular interactions.

Shorter chains are often referred to as oligopeptides (typically under ~10–15 amino acids), while longer chains (up to around ~50 amino acids) are considered polypeptides. Beyond that size, they are generally classified as full proteins.

The Basic Science

Peptides are formed when amino acids link together through peptide bonds.

During this process, a molecule of water is released and each amino acid becomes what is known as a residue within the peptide chain.

Most peptides (except cyclic peptides) have two structural ends:

  • N-terminal — the amine group
  • C-terminal — the carboxyl group

These structures influence how peptides behave in biochemical environments and how they interact with biological systems in research models.

Why Researchers Study Peptides

Peptides are widely studied because their structure allows researchers to investigate:

  • Cellular communication pathways
  • Protein signalling mechanisms
  • Molecular binding interactions
  • Biochemical regulation processes

Their relatively small size and defined amino-acid sequences make them useful tools for controlled laboratory studies.
